My Journey With Paul

It was almost 9 years ago. I was on my way home after a long day. While on a Subway platform waiting for my train, about ten feet away, I saw a gentleman in a blue jacket and decided to talk to him. I didn't know how to start the conversation. I simply went: “Nice Jacket!”

That little sentence has lead to 9 years of great friendship with Paul my business partner. We have been through a lot together. I remember him helping me register my first business. I was so excited that day that I couldn't contain my joy. I looked Paul in the eyes and said: “Just watch. We are going to change the world”. After these many years, I don't think we have changed the world yet. Just the other day, I was laughing with Paul saying that before changing the world, our job has been to change...us. Lol

With all we have been through together, one story is still stuck in my mind. It was in 2004, and there was nothing to show for after months of hard work. Paul, being a huge soccer fan (and average player lol) got a job offer as a manager of a soccer club. That was one of his dream jobs at the time. He successfully passed the interview and was offered the position. To my surprise, he decided not to take the job. I was stunned. How could he let this opportunity pass by? Do you know why he decided not to take the job? Well, it was because of the vision we had together. Can you believe that!!! He gave up his dream job to work with me while I had nothing.

I can go on and on with hundreds of stories. But I will just share this one:

We had a presentation this last Tuesday evening. Paul and I met on Monday evening so that he could help me rehearse my presentation before sharing it with our guests on Tuesday. I had something in mind, but Paul thought it was not enough. He challenged me go dig deeper into my stories and share them in a way that I had never shared before. It took me a while to get his point, but once I got it I was ready to share stories that I had never shared with anyone.

Among the people who attended our event were some close friends. They were shocked to hear what happened in my life these last years. I was able to connect more with the audience by opening up and sharing what I had been hiding for years. It was not an easy thing to do, but I am learning to do it more, thanks to Paul.

He is really a true friend. I will never take him for granted. I hope you won't take your friends for granted. Take time to appreciate them, above all, let them know what they mean to you. Cherish them while they are still around. They are a treasure which can be hard to find.

Thanks so much Paul for all you have done for me.

Always a pleasure

My Journey to a Press Conference

What a game 7 for the Raptors!! Kahwi shot was out of this world. I am still in shock.
But, let me talk about a game that happened a while back. Game 5.
As game 5 against the Philadelphia 76ers and our beloved Raptors ended with a huge victory from the local team, we headed down to the press conference location. The media people were lining up in front of the elevator and the length of the line was one of those I had never seen. We had to wait for the elevator to go down and back up at least three times before we could get in.
By the time we finally got in the elevator, the TV monitor inside the elevator was showing Serge Ibaka’ s press conference. Shoot, we were running late.
We finally got down, and as we were rushing to the conference room, I bumped into Toronto FC soccer superstar Jozy Altidore. He said hi to me and I said hi back. It was surreal. Then, in front of me, I saw this huge guy with tattoos all over his body. I didn’t know who he was, but he caught my attention. As it turn…

My Journey with Fidèle

It has been quite a few busy weeks that involved a round trip to Ottawa on Saturday and preaching during a Sunday church service (yes, I was surprised too when I was asked to do it). All this time I was thinking about what I would be writing about on this week’s blog. I had a vague idea, but I did not know how to formulate it.
That was until I received a message on Facebook from a friend asking me to speak at an upcoming event in January. The topic of my presentation would be “The Moment that Defined Your Life”. The person who sent me the invitation did not know that I had been thinking about the same topic days prior to her message.
It all started when I was at a Toronto Raptors game. I have been reporting on the games for almost two months now, but I am still in awe every time I am at the arena. I can’t believe this is happening to me. I have been in rooms with childhood idols, biggest stars of the game, coaches, reporters, you name it. And every time I am saying “wow”. The other day,…

My Journey with a man of faith

Many years ago, I heard a businessman say that if you don’t have a dream, be around dreamers. Now, I am going to add to his statement and say that if you don’t have faith, be around people of faith.
I met this gentleman over sixteen years ago when I first came to Canada. After a few months, we became roommates. It was very fun evenings among friends hearing and telling funny jokes. We didn’t know what we would become later, but I knew this guy was going somewhere. He was a devoted Christian man, playing music in two different churches. He had a picture in his room with a huge crowd on it and I knew he was meant to impact people’s lives. Little did I know I would be, many years later among the people who would be impacted by his life.
We went our separate ways but kept in touch. He later became a Pastor (and I was not surprised at all by that), and I attended his church a few times.
In 2013, I was going through one of the toughest moments of my life and I needed help. I didn’t know wh…
