My Journey with a Great Artist

As I was doing some work on the computer on Saturday, my phone rang. It was my wife calling. "Maybe she misses me", I thought.

I picked up the phone and I heard a very excited voice on the other side of the line. "Yeah I was right. She misses me", I thought again. When she started speaking, I knew it was not about me she was excited about. Too bad.

She was excited about her brother.

My wife's brother is an artist. In fact, he is a very talented artist. When I first met him, he gave me a CD of one of his songs, and I was amazed. The dude is really talented. I have spent time with him, in fact he spent an entire week with us when we just got married, and I can tell you that he is a very humble guy. You will never tell that he is the one singing those songs. He can spend an entire hour without saying a word. He is very calm. But when he hit the stage, it's like he is on something.

The reason why my wife was very excited was because her brother was in a contest and he just won. He is about to sign a very lucrative contract. When my wife told me the amount he will be getting monthly, I was like "I wish I were his manager". He is going to be loaded very soon. I was so happy for him. He really deserves it. I know that he has been working so hard for years.

When I arrived home that evening, my wife told me that her brother has been trying to win the contest for years. But each time he was falling short. Do you know what he was doing when he did not get the contract? He was congratulating the winners. I like that. I think it is a great attitude.

Talking about music, our church had special guests this last Sunday. We had a band coming to play for us. When I first heard their name, it did not ring a bell for me. It was for the first time I heard the name "Krystaal". I went online to research the name, and I was blown away. These guys are the real deal. I was on the front row when they were playing, and I found myself showing some dance moves that I didn't know I had. Boy, these guys are good!

They took a break from playing, and the lead singer shared their story with us. Man, what I could say was just WOW!.

They grew up in Bujumbura, capital city of Burundi. When the war started, they fled to Kenya and they found themselves in a refugee camp way up North of the country. For years, they lived in harsh conditions, sometimes going for days without food or water. However, they kept their love for music, even when they were in camps.

The right people came at the right time, and they found themselves in Canada over twenty years ago.
Their Band was created a few years afterwards, and they have been playing all over the world. He told us that they have played for former Presidents Carter and Bill Clinton. How cool is that?

I learned once again, from my wife's brother, and from Krystaal, that in due season we shall have our promised blessings if we faint not. I hope my season is soon.

Moral of the story? Do you want to know a great artist? Just call me and I will introduce you to my brother-in-law

Always a pleasure

Patrick

My Journey with Fidèle

It has been quite a few busy weeks that involved a round trip to Ottawa on Saturday and preaching during a Sunday church service (yes, I was surprised too when I was asked to do it). All this time I was thinking about what I would be writing about on this week’s blog. I had a vague idea, but I did not know how to formulate it.
That was until I received a message on Facebook from a friend asking me to speak at an upcoming event in January. The topic of my presentation would be “The Moment that Defined Your Life”. The person who sent me the invitation did not know that I had been thinking about the same topic days prior to her message.
It all started when I was at a Toronto Raptors game. I have been reporting on the games for almost two months now, but I am still in awe every time I am at the arena. I can’t believe this is happening to me. I have been in rooms with childhood idols, biggest stars of the game, coaches, reporters, you name it. And every time I am saying “wow”. The other day,…

My Journey with a man of faith

Many years ago, I heard a businessman say that if you don’t have a dream, be around dreamers. Now, I am going to add to his statement and say that if you don’t have faith, be around people of faith.
I met this gentleman over sixteen years ago when I first came to Canada. After a few months, we became roommates. It was very fun evenings among friends hearing and telling funny jokes. We didn’t know what we would become later, but I knew this guy was going somewhere. He was a devoted Christian man, playing music in two different churches. He had a picture in his room with a huge crowd on it and I knew he was meant to impact people’s lives. Little did I know I would be, many years later among the people who would be impacted by his life.
We went our separate ways but kept in touch. He later became a Pastor (and I was not surprised at all by that), and I attended his church a few times.
In 2013, I was going through one of the toughest moments of my life and I needed help. I didn’t know wh…

My Journey to the Book

It has been quite overwhelming the last few days
I shared the link to my book to a few friends and the response has been a shock to me. The support has been unbelievable. All the comments are quite similar to this message that I received from a friend who has been more than a brother to me. Those of us who know him back in the day, we call him Kissa.
He wrote:
Hello bro I finally got a chance to watch the video. And I have 2 conflicting reactions: 1) what a powerful and incredible story man. It is amazing. I would love to rush put in on my facebook and twitter account for everybody to learn from you. How can I pay to order an autographed book? 2) I am also angry against you man. I was supposed to be your brother and friend. You could have asked me for a little help. Instead of living the fight alone. I hope one of the lessons learned in your journey would also be: Know your friends In any case, bravo and can't tell how much I respect you and I am proud of you Cheers
